Green Office Practices

Think before you print; only print or make copies when it is absolutely necessary.

Use both sides of a paper.  Invest in a printer/copier that can print/copy documents on both sides of paper.

Develop a paperless filing system.  Instead of maintaining a printed filing system for your office or home use a scanner to scan your documents into applicable formats, such as, PDFs, Word Documents, JPEGs, etc. that may be saved to your computer and then organized within computer folders.  Be sure to frequently backup your computer filing system.   Litchfield County Board of REALTORS®, Inc. will offer a Paperless Training class designed to explain how to create a paperless filing system this September; please watch our website for more information.

Instead of distributing printed documents send them via email.  This is not only easier for you, but the person who receives the item can save it to their computer for reference.

When a document is no longer of use instead of throwing it out use the blank side for scrap paper.

Use recycled paper products.

Spend a little more for quality furnishings and equipment that will last longer, so you’re not sending stuff to the landfill because it is broken or worn out.

When discarding old computers and other electronic equipment, keep it out of landfill by donating it to an organization that will refurbish it and pass it on to a charitable agency, if possible, or ensure that it is recycled. Visit the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency website or Charity Village to find an organization in your area.

Return ink and toner cartridges to be refilled or recycled.

Send an email or use an online fax service to reduce printing.

Make it a policy to place recycling bins in accessible, high-traffic areas and provide clear information about what can and can not be recycled.

Plan your showings wisely. This will not only save you time and Gas, but please your clients. There are many after market GPS systems that are quite reasonable. If you route changes they will get you right back on track.

Research energy saving tips for new home owners, make a magnet with these tips and use them for marketing.

Consider closing gifts that will help your buyer be green, i.e. environmentally conscious cleaning products, motion sensor light switches, recycling inserts for under sink, etc.

Offer your buyer clients the option of an energy rating with other inspections. Information about professionals whom conduct such tests can be found on the Ecobroker.com web site.
